Meet The Team

After years of working in the field, Calgary born Barry Hemphill – a carpenter, framer and builder –identified a significant gap in the custom renovation and building market: "I find too many contractors often only care about speed and bottomline with less attention to quality", Barry observed.  With honed skills throughout the years and with a series of projects, courses, certificate programs and apprenticeships, he decided to do something about it, and formed Convivium Contracting Corp.

Before, during, and after the four year Carpentry certificate program via the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology (SIAST), Barry was able to explore different aspects of the construction industry. He had accomplished this by apprenticing beside his journeyman father & mentor in the family contracting business. After the program and ten years plus with his father, he went on to explore some of the different aspects in the industry.  He was a carpenter at PCL on Calgary skyscrapers, lead-hand responsible for a team of 12-16 professionals in a multi-family framing company between 1999-2004, as well as the leading framing subtrade for Jayman Homes Calgary between 2004-2009.

After spending years in the various aspects of the profession, Barry realized his time at home in the family contracting business is where he excelled and was happiest, he wanted to get back to his roots. The smaller scope in comparison to the commercial & industrial projects, combined with diverse challenges and more personal experience is what really drew him in.

From the beginning, Barry has been on a pursuit to bring the highest of quality to homes, renovations and various projects throughout the Calgary area. He believes every project should be crafted in a way that speaks for itself both in quality and design. With that in mind, in 2010, Barry formed Convivium Contracting Corp. and has since procured a team of subtrades, suppliers, vendors, and employees who share the same values as him.

“We are proactive problems-solvers who are dedicated to delivering outcomes that fully meet and exceed our clients’ visions and requirements. We strive to bring functionality and of course style through esthetics to everything we create, whether it's a kitchen, a basement, a bathroom or a single family home. Our expertise in construction translates into better-realized residential visions. We strongly believe that building a beautiful home is not just about how fast and profitable you get the job done." - Barry

Nicole Hemphill studied Art & Art History at the University of Saskatchewan for 2 years. She then obtained her Architectural Technologies diploma from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in 1996, and later received her  Interior Decorating Extension Certificate Mount Royal University. In 1997 after graduating and seeking drafting positions in her field of study, Nicole was presented with an opportunity to get involved with a production and custom builder who required a Junior Drafts Person.

Nicole took the junior drafting role at Nelson Homes where she excelled as a team player and quality employee. Here, Nicole perfected how to manage her time efficiently and take on the responsibility of being involved with multiple projects at any given time; all the while maintaining the high level of quality in the drawings she was producing. In 1999 less than 2 years later, Nicole took the incontestable opening as Senior Architectural Technologist in the then, Calgary branch of Nelson Homes before it was relocated to High River.

After working with Nelson Homes for 11 years, Nicole took a leap of faith and looked to start her own design and drafting company. In 2008, after procuring the design/drafting contract for Nelson Homes head office including over 35 regional dealers and companies for the Canadian, US and European divisions, Nicole Hemphill opened the doors to Fusion Home Designs Inc.

With a renewed energy and focus based on life balance and time management; it was here where Nicole really felt comfortable and "in her element". Project diversity is key at Fusion Home Designs and she never knows what type of project she may be working on next. The projects aren't just limited to varied production housing it now diverges from luxury homes, large custom acreage properties, Inner City In-fills, Extensive Renovations, Multi-family housing, and a multitude of unique projects.  Nicole is bringing forward the strong work ethic from her humble beginnings, and creating superb custom & unique designs all the while having the ability multi-task efficiently, communicate effectively and continue to produce quality sets of construction drawings within a quoted time frame.

HOW WE WORK

The mainstay of our business is engaging in the art of quality home renovations and building services by delivering excellent craftsmanship through attention to detail.

Our core values are honesty and excellent customer service. For many of our clients, this is their first time through a home renovation or building project hence we go the extra mile to educate them and make their project hassle free by managing every aspect of each construction project

People Matter

We believe people are the most important resource any company could have. We are committed to employing tradespeople with high quality skills, a strong commitment to producing high quality work and a sense of pride in their work.

Building Relationships

We believe the foundation of building any home starts with thinking about how people are going to live in it. This means that we spend time getting to know our clients, their dreams and hopes for the project.

Approach Is Everything

We know there are lots of other builders out there, but we believe what sets us apart is how we approach a problem. We listen to our clients – not just at the beginning, but throughout the project. We pay attention to the ‘big picture” and to the “small details” needed to accomplish high-quality craftsmanship.

Dedicated to Quality

We are a team of dedicated professionals for whom quality, durability and aesthetics are at the heart of everything we do. We work to ensure that we are up to date on the latest changes to the building codes and armed with all of the tools to deliver a first-class result for our clients.

Convivium's S.I.M.P.L.E Build Process

CONVIVIUM LOGO Tree crop 200.png

Convivium recognises that a renovation or new construction projects come with a mix of emotions: stress, excitement, worry, and oftentimes, it can be overwhelming. We realize that most of the concerns our clients have, simply come from a lack of knowledge, or unfortunately , a bad prior experience. To relieve some of that tension and to make sure your next project is a great experience; Convivium will be your advisor and educator from the start. We will do everything we can to alleviate the uncertainty, clear-up any confusion, and avoid the “surprises” that arise and are ever-too-common in our industry.

With years of experience and development, we’ve formed proprietary steps in order to simplify and streamline the often complex construction process for our clients. Convivum's S.I.M.P.L.E process has helped us bring many projects from their initial idea stage to high-quality completion in an exceedingly efficient and easy-to-understand method.

069742-blue-metallic-orb-icon-alphanumeric-percent-sign.png

During the initial visit, you get to meet the project manager and design team, the team possess a wealth of home design experience and will provide valuable advice that will help you achieve your goals. We will walk through your space with you and ask for your wish list.  Measurements of the space will help to sketch up the project area and suggest inputs into achieving the design that suits your vision.

Design can be and should-be the most arduous and involved part of the building process, involving literally hundreds of decisions. From the development of basic sketches or simple plans from an outside source, our in house design company Fusion Home Designs, can create a custom construction build-set that details every item in your project, all the way down to the light-switch, this is true design.

Created on your wants and needs, 90% of the concept, functionality, efficiency and of course aesthetics of your project will be discussed, debated, and decided upon during this stage. When we put the thought and effort here, the other 10% comes together during construction, which becomes the exciting part!    Yes, there will always be changes and “tweaks” in the field as the planning we've done becomes a reality and you get a chance to see your vision come to fruition in your new space. But nothing sets us up for success, more than a solid, well thought-out, and detailed design.

proposal finalization.jpg

If we've missed you during the preliminary design phase, we can review your current plans and assess whether they are suitable for your particular home and can meet the permit guidelines. If there are any inconsistencies, we can have fusion home designs, our in-house designers and draftsperson ensure they are up to code.

Now comes the fun part. Selecting the finishes and fixtures is key to determining the final budget range for your project. It will also give us the final look and feel of the interior and/or exterior of the renovation or build.

Construction Stage

All the prep work is done and the planning will pay off. City permits are approved and acquired. With deposit made and trades lined up, let’s get rolling!! Construction begins and the pieces of the puzzle start coming together. From inception to completion of your project, our dedicated team is in place to assist you throughout the various phases of the project.

Project milestones (Demo, Framing, exterior finish, Mechanical services, insulation/Drywall, interior Finishing, and Kitchen) will be put in place by the project manager in consultation with you. We will start organizing the contractors and crew necessary to complete the job within the timelines set forth. However, as mentioned there will always be changes and “tweaks” in the field as your vision comes to fruition in your new space.

Before your eyes you will see your dream take shape. While renovating can be disruptive, we strive to keep it to a minimum. The project will come together in as smooth a transition as possible. In the final stage, professional cleaners will polish up your new living space.

Together, a final walk through will be done to ensure all your requirements have been met. Our in-house photographer will take pictures (with homeowner approval of course!). They may be featured on our website and you will be provided with copies to show off to family and friends.

Interior Design

So the house is perfect! Now what? We have interior design specialist that can be procured to assist you with every selection, all the way down to the bath towels. As a contractor offers a unique perspective to the project, so does the interior designer. If you personally connect with someone who really “gets” your style, they can be involved in the project from the very beginning, and assist or select your finishes, tile, countertops, cabinet design, colors, textures, and even furniture so that your new or renovated home looks and feels as good as it was designed and built.
